What is an online ICAO English test?
The ICAO English Language Proficiency Test assesses how effectively a pilot understands and communicates in operational aviation contexts. It is also commonly searched for as an ICAO ELP exam, aviation English exam, pilot English test or LPT. The assessment focuses on spoken communication rather than technical knowledge or memorised phraseology.
A certified examiner evaluates pronunciation, structure, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension and interaction. The lowest score among these six descriptors determines the overall ICAO level.
Can the examination be completed remotely?
Yes. The session is held by video call, allowing pilots to participate from home, a hotel or their operating base. You need a stable internet connection, a quiet room, a computer with a working camera and microphone, and valid photo identification.
Levels and certification
The result may be ICAO Level 4 (Operational), Level 5 (Extended) or Level 6 (Expert). Official administration, results and certificates are processed through an approved Language Testing Body. Results are normally issued within 12 hours, although candidates should allow up to 24 hours.
Certificate acceptance and licence endorsement remain the responsibility of the pilot’s licensing authority. Confirm your authority’s requirements before booking, particularly if your licence is issued outside the EASA system.
A calm pilot-to-pilot session
The examination must remain fair and professional, but it does not need to feel intimidating. A friendly introduction, clear instructions and a natural conversation help you settle into the session and demonstrate your genuine language ability. You are not expected to sound like a native speaker or recite prepared answers.
